Antiques in the Vest-Lindsey House

This painting is a portrait of General John Hunt Morgan, C. 1868  painted by artist Benjamin Franklin Reinhart.  Born in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, on  Aug. 29, 1829, Reinhard displayed an early artistic bent and studied in  Pittsburgh and New York at the National Academy. From about 1849  to 1853 he studied and toured Europe. Moreover, during the Civil War he became known as a historical and genre painter in England. Prior to this time he worked in New York, Ohio and New Orleans on portraits of notable and famous characters. It is said that in 1868 he had a temporary studio in Lexington, KY.,  while on a sojourn from Ohio, at which time he accomplished portraits of General John Hunt Morgan. Reinhart died May 3, 1885  in Philadelphia.  The frame is original to the portrait and has been repaired. The painting was restored by Ted Nightwine of the Cincinnati Art Museum.
